Empowering individuals to create positive change in their lives
As a psychologist, I, Dr. Merle Tyroler, have been dedicated to helping individuals and families navigate life's challenges for over 40 years. I am passionate about understanding what drives human behavior and how people develop strategies to overcome obstacles. My journey as a psychologist began at the University of Virginia, where I earned my undergraduate degree in developmental psychology. I then pursued my Master's and Ph. D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Georgia, with a minor in Child and Family Development. My training emphasized the assessment and treatment of a broad range of disorders in children and adults, primarily from a cognitive-behavioral framework.
My Background and Expertise
My fascination with human behavior and relationships led me to explore various areas of interest. I developed a strong interest in Marriage and Family Therapy, which was a burgeoning field in the late 1970s. I pursued a post-doctoral fellowship, which allowed me to combine my previous training with a systems-oriented approach, focusing on the interactions between people. This experience profoundly shaped my approach to therapy, recognizing the importance of improving relationships in achieving a healthy and satisfying life.
Therapy Services
As a licensed psychologist, I offer individual, marital, and family therapy services to children and adults. My approach is collaborative and active, supporting clients in achieving their goals. During our first session, I gather information about your situation, incorporating various brief therapy techniques, including cognitive-behavioral, family systems, mindfulness, solution-focused brief therapy, and Gottman-based marital therapy. I assign "homework" to actively engage clients in the process, incorporating skills into daily life. While I work primarily from a brief therapy model, treatment length depends on the complexity of issues and goals.
My Philosophy
I believe that therapy is an opportunity to learn new skills, new ways of thinking, and new models for resolving issues. My approach is holistic, incorporating focus on exercise, sleep habits, nutrition, and relaxation techniques to promote healthy resilience. I emphasize individualized strategies and emphasize that therapy is not meant to solve every issue, but rather to equip individuals with the resilience to navigate life's challenges.
